Synopsis
“The Birthday Present” is a black-and-white, wink-and-nudge love letter to the classic comedies of the 1920’s and 30’s. Rooted in timeless circus tradition and physical storytelling, this ten-minute short pays homage to the great comedic performers of yesterday—Keaton, Chaplin, Arbuckle, Lloyd and the Marx Brothers. The story follows Mona, our clumsy, sweet, stupid hero, searching for the perfect birthday present for Rollie St. Claire, an under-employed snow shoveler with big dreams of becoming a Zoo Keeper. In a world where rapscallion clowns aren’t allowed to set foot in a Zoo, Mona must steal the key to the Zoo gates to win the affection of her beloved. The Birthday Present brings us back to the roots of comedy: sight gags and chase scenes, silence and stillness. Without relying on irony, reference or cynicism, it brings to life the struggles of a clown who always gets back on her feet when the world knocks her down.
